Dr. Garner has almost a decade of experience at the doctoral level working with both Veterans and First Responder populations. She has received specialized training in the areas of psychological trauma, addiction, suicide risk, and psychological and forensic assessment while working in forensic, emergency, outpatient, and inpatient settings, one of which was treating combat Veterans on a residential unit.
Dr. Garner currently treats clients with PTS/PTSD, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, SMI, relationship issues, and clients experiencing adjustment, chronic pain, and sleep-related difficulties.
In addition, she also specializes in helping those experiencing identity loss, which was topic of doctoral dissertation which focused on identity development and loss in special operations populations.
Dr. Garner currently holds down positions at both NFA and at Montana VA where she is a program manager for the Triage and Rapid Evaluation Clinic, member of the Montana VA CIT/CISM and Postvention team, as well as the newly formed Montana Veteran Mobile Evaluation (VMET) Team.
Dr. Garner wants to help reduce the rates of suicide, ease psychological suffering of others, and promote growth and psychological resiliency in her community. She is eager to help reduce the statistic of 22 Veterans a day dying by suicide and understand what was contributing to our nation’s Veterans dying by their own hands.
She started with NFA in 2019 as a Postdoctoral Fellow and still currently works for NFA providing telehealth services remotely from Montana. Dr. Garner learned about NFA in 2013 after attending an NFA training as a Problem Solving Court Coordinator and was immediately drawn to the unique and specialized services that NFA provided to First Responders including crisis intervention, threat assessment, wellness, and peer support. From that moment, she realized she wanted to pivot professionally in an effort to learn more about psychological trauma and suicide.
With a renewed interest and passion, Dr. Garner returned to graduate school in 2014 to further her education and training in an effort to become culturally competent in the areas of stress and trauma in both first responder and military populations.
When she isn’t working with clients she likes to play ice hockey, travel to warm destinations, and engage in retail therapy.
