Several psychologists on staff, including Dr. John Nicoletti, Dr. Axelrod, and Dr. Tasci are American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) Certified Specialists in Police & Public Safety Psychology.

Among psychologists, American Board Certification signifies the highest level of advanced certification available in the field of psychology.

For more than 60 years, the ABPP has provided board certification for psychologists through credential review and competency-based written and oral examination processes.

Dr. Nicoletti is a Denver native and attended Lincoln High School. His brother, who retired at the rank of Captain and as head of the Crime Lab, was an officer with the Denver Police Department.

Nicoletti-Flater Associates is the only business owned by Dr. Nicoletti and Ms. Flater. Their focus is on ensuring the highest standard of care for clients, and maintaining strong oversight of staff.

Most of the clinicians currently employed by Nicoletti-Flater Associates have over 10 years of service with Nicoletti-Flater Associates and/or a minimum of 10 years of combined education and related experience.

An integral part of the Crisis Intervention Team

Nicoletti-Flater Associates has been an integral part of the Crisis Intervention Team (C.I.T.) training program since its inception and has developed several innovative trauma response, wellness, and disaster management programs, while also being a leader in the development and training of peer support programs for public safety professionals.

Our certified training programs

Three of Nicoletti-Flater Associates’ training programs have previously been certified by the Colorado Police Officers Standards and Training Program (POST) including: a 40 hour law enforcement officer peer support training program, a preventing police officer suicide program, and a pre-retirement training program.

Psychological services for police

Nicoletti-Flater Associates staff are members of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and Dr. Nicoletti served as Chair of the Psychological Services Section from 2004-2006. Dr. Axelrod was chair of the Section between 2019 and 2020.

Nicoletti-Flater Associates staff have also been involved with the development/revision of other IACP guidelines including the guidelines for Psychological Fitness-for-Duty Evaluations, Officer Involved Shootings, and Peer Support.

Articles and books focused on psychological issues

Staff members from Nicoletti-Flater Associates have authored and contributed to numerous articles and books focused on psychological issues in policing, assessing the psychological suitability of candidates for public safety positions, development and use of employee assistance programs, violence/risk assessment, stress management, disaster management, and trauma recovery.
